Technical Drawing

In the actual curriculums of engineering degrees in the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the spatial vision skill is considered as a competence that should be developed by students. The teachers of Graphic Design are struggling to achieve that students develop those tasks which require spatial visualization and reasoning abilities. This is the source of interest for developing and validating applications and procedures which might be included in the curriculum of Graphic Engineering for providing the students with good levels of spatial skill.

Some activies have been developed with VEDILS to improve spatiall vision skills.

Technical Drawing for Engineering students

In a subject of the curriculum of the degree on Instituto Superior de Engenharia at University of Algarve, students learn foundations of technical drawing including perspectives, layouts, spaces, measurement units, etc. With the aim of practicing their abilities, the teacher give their students several printable documents with some images of isometric views of different pieces. Then, the students can visualize 3d models of the pieces deployed over the isometric views, by using a free AR app for mobile devices, called Augment. Previously, the teacher has to link the images with the corresponding 3d models for those pieces, by using the authoring environment provided along with this tool

Previous Approach

Previous approach with Augment

Advantages
  • Students can work at their own pace
  • Better spatial vision.
  • Allow users to interact with virtual objects.
  • Provide rich contextual customized learning environment and contents for each single individual.

Disadvantages
  • There is no evidence that activity was used.
  • We cannot know which models were viewed more.
  • We have to evaluate with external tools what has been learned.
  • We cannot introduce new ways of communication, e.g.: explanations of the models with the teacher’s voice.

Using VEDILS teachers have now the tools necessary to deploy an Android application that include Augmented Reality

Actual Approach

Approach with VEDILS

Implementation of VEDILS

Components of VEDILS
  • ARCamera to show the Augmented Reality
  • ARObjectTracker to recognize images
  • AR3DModelAsset to show 3D models
  • ActivityTracker to know who used the app, where, when, how many times, ....
